Thoreau's arrest in July 1846 by Concord constable Sam Staples, who jailed him for refusing to pay the poll tax, happened while Thoreau was living at the pond. The argument Thoreau makes in "Civil Disobedience," that the individual conscience must take precedence over unjust law, is the political expression of the same principle that drives Walden's critique of economic conformity.
